Top Ebike Questions
What is an electric bike?
An electric bike (or e-bike) is just like a regular bike, only better! Its a bicycle with a built-in electric motor that assists you as you pedal. The motor kicks in when you pedal and amplifies your leg strength, making it feel like you have bionic powers. Whether you’re climbing hills, riding into the wind, or just want a smoother sweat free ride, and Ebike makes it easy.
How do Ebikes work?
A sensor built into the pedals detects you pedaling effort. Then a signal is sent to an electric motor to amplify your pedaling effort to make the pedals much easier to push. Other than that, an Ebike works just like a regular bike. They feel natural to ride, and the sensation of easy pedaling make an Ebike so enjoyable.
How far can an Ebike go on a single charge?
Most Ebikes can go anywhere from 40 to 60 miles per charge, depending on the battery size, riding mode, terrain, and rider weight. Premium models can stretch that even further. EbikeCityZen offers Ebike models with dual and even triple battery options if you need more than 40 miles of range per charge.
How fast can Ebikes go—and are there speed limits?
E-bikes are usually limited to assisted speeds of 20 mph or 28 mph depending on the class. In the U.S., Class 1 and 2 bikes assist up to 20 mph, while Class 3 can go up to 28 mph. When your Ebike meets these classifications, it is legally considered to be just like a regular bike as far as where and how it can be ridden. EbikeCityZen highly recommends (and only sells) Ebikes that are legally classified as class 1, 2, or 3.
Two-wheeled electric vehicles that surpass these three classifications do not meet the definition of a bicycle and require additional licensing like a motorcycle would.
Do I need a license or insurance to ride an Ebike?
No. In most U.S. states, you do not need a license or insurance to ride a legally classified low-speed electric bicycle. Class 1 or 2 or 3 Ebikes are treated the same as traditional bikes in virtually all municipalities. Always check your local laws to be sure. You can be assured that all Ebikes sold by EbikeCityZen are legal to ride anywhere a regular bike can go, with certain limitied restrictions for class 3 Ebikes. Please call our Ebike Expert Joe Borrelli to clarify any questions you have about legal Ebike classifications.
What are the different types of Ebikes?
There are commuter Ebikes, folding Ebikes, fat tire Ebikes, cargo Ebikes, and more. The best one for you depends on how and where you plan to ride. Luckily, our resident Ebike Expert, Joe Borrelli is here to help! He specializes in matching up the perfect Ebike for your particular needs and wants, and offers free at-home Ebike test rides for customers in the Chicago area.
How long do Ebike batteries last?
An Ebike battery typically lasts 3–5 years or 500–1,000 charge cycles with proper care. Charging habits and storage conditions make a big difference. EbikeCityZen can help you learn to maintain your Ebike battery for optimal life.
Are electric bikes easy to pedal?
Yes! That's the magic of pedal assist. When you ride an Ebike, it literally feels like you have bionic legs. And you can adjust the level of assist to suit your needs. Want more of a workout? Just dial the assist level down. Want pedalling to be almost effortless, turn the assist to maximum. Or anywhere in between.
Once you discover the joy of pedal assist, you'll naturally start using your Ebike way more often than you imagined. You'll leave the car at home for the majority of your short distance errands, and you'll ride further than you expected on your leisure trips.
You'll arrive invigorated and refreshed, not sweaty and worn out.
What’s the difference between pedal assist and throttle?
Pedal assist gives you a boost only when you're pedaling, while throttle lets you ride without pedaling at all—kind of like a scooter. Most of the Ebikes offered by EbikeCityZen have both pedal assist and throttle. Since pedaling an Ebike is so easy, we normally use the throttle sparingly during our rides. We love using the throttle occasionally for an extra boost of speed for crossing intersections, going up an incline, or just giving us a little extra momentum.
Are Ebikes good for commuting?
Yes! Ebikes can make commuting faster & cheaper than cars, and less sweaty than traditional bikes. They’re especially great for avoiding traffic and parking headaches. You can save significant commuting costs compared to driving, using public transit and even public bike share programs.
If your workplace is within 15 miles of your home, Ebikes are the perfect solution. You can even combine your Ebike ride with public transportation when your commute is longer.
How far can Ebikes go?
EbikeCityZen's owner averages about 40-50 miles per charge on his personal Ebikes. Our quality Eunorau ebikes have a robust battery that is more than sufficient for a full day of commuting, running errands and taking some leisurely rides. Plus, if you're planning a longer ride, you can always stop at a cafe and top off the battery from a standard wall outlet while you have a lunch break.
For those who plan to ride their Ebike for up to 120 miles at a time, we have options for you, too. Many of our Ebikes are set up to carry additional batteries, which will double or even triple the standard range of a single battery. Just let us know, and we'll set you up with just the right amount of power to take you where you want to ride.
How much do Ebikes cost?
Cheap Ebikes start under $1,000, while premium models can go up to $5,000 or more. The price depends on build quality, battery range, and extra features.
Cheap Ebikes like those that can be found on massive websites that sell everything from A to Z often offer no dealer support, can be made of cheap components, and may not be of high quality. Here at EbikeCityZen we often get calls from people who have purchased an Ebike from a mass-retailer that has problems.
Expensive Ebikes often are very high quality from high end brick and mortar bike shops, but may have just a few extra features over similar quality mid-priced Ebikes.
EbikeCityZen curates a collection of quality Ebikes in the mid-price range. We are proud to be certified retailers of Eunorau Ebikes. With a 2 year warranty on the electrical and mechanical components and a 10 year warranty on the frame, the quality of Eunorau cannot be beat for the price! As a certified Eunorau dealer, we can attest that the factory support we have available is phenomenal - and in turn we can support you as our customer.
Are electric bikes worth it?
Absolutely yes! Especially when you factor in how often you'll trade car trips for Ebike rides. The typical Ebike owner rides their bike 3X more often than a regular bike owner. Savings on gas, parking & wear and tear on your car can more than pay for the price of your new Ebike in just a few months.
And, when you consider how much time you'll save over driving in the city, and how fun, stress free, and relaxing and Ebike ride is, the mental health benefits are priceless.
How much do electric bikes weigh?
Ebikes are heavier than traditional bikes, but feel much lighter when you're riding because of the pedal assist. Our typical models can range from 50-70lbs. Cargo bikes can weigh a bit more, but still feel light to ride. And if you do need to lift your Ebike, for most, they are not unmanagable. You can also remove the battery to take about 9lbs off the Ebike when you need to carry it or load it into another vehicle.
Are electric bikes heavy?
Ebikes are heavier than analog bikes. But you don't feel the weight of the bike while you're riding. In fact Ebikes feel lighter than most regular bikes due to the electric pedal assist.

Are electric bikes genuinely sustainable?
Yes. When compared to other modes of transportation, the only more sustainable mode is walking or using a stroller or wheelchair! Ebikes require minimal materials to build compared to other vehicles, and even when you figure in the raw materials for the Ebike battery, it's only a tiny fraction of the Li-ion that an electric car uses. When you consider that Ebikes can navigate crowded cities often faster than cars, they're a more efficient use of time as well.

Are Ebikes legal?
Yes - all of the Ebikes that EbikeCityZen sells are legally classified just like a regular bike. All of our bikes meet Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3 designation as low-speed, electrically assisted bicycles which have been adpoted as standard in 41 states. Only Alaska and Rhode Island do not leagally recognize low speed Ebikes as regular bicycles. EbikeCityZen is a proud supporter of People for Bikes, a not-for profit organization that has compiled this handy resource for Ebike laws in your state.
We often advise customers that some 2 wheeled electric vehicles have too much power and go too fast to be legally classified as bicycles, even though they are sometimes mistakenly labled "e-bikes". In actuality, these non-classified vehicles are legally treated like motorcycles and require a license and registration - and cannot be ridden on bike lanes or paths. We do not sell these types of vehicles!
When you purchase your Ebike from EbikeCityZen.com, you can be assured that the electric bike you receive is completely legal - just like a regular bike, only better!
Can I travel with my Ebike?
Yes. The best way to travel with your Ebike is to carry it in the trunk of a car, truck or RV. EbikeCityZen has folding Ebikes that are specifically great for traveling with. There are also hitch mounted bike racks that you can carry your full size Ebike on. In fact, our owner, Joe Borrelli uses a hitch mounted rack to carry up to 3 Ebikes at a time on the back of a regular station wagon!
Traveling by airplane with an Ebike can be more difficult, due to Li-ion battery restrictions in checked luggage.
Do Ebikes need insurance?
No, Class 1, 2 & 3 Ebikes are considered the same as regular bikes and do not need any license or insurance to ride them in all but two states in the US (confusing laws exist only in Alaska and Rhode Island, so please check current requirements). Some people choose to insure their Ebikes against theft or liability, but it is not a requirement.
Are Ebikes good for fitness?
Absolutely! When riding an Ebike, you are still pedaling. And you can choose the level of assist that is right for you. With moderate pedal assist, you'll be exerting the same effort as you might on a brisk walk. Instead of getting 10,000 steps into your day, you can easily get the same amount of pedals and actually get some errands done at the same time. No need to go to a gym and get nowhere on a treadmill. The magic of Ebikes is that you can combine your daily movement needs with your regular travel routines, and claim back all of the time you'd be sitting stagnant in your car.
Also, Ebike owners ride further and way more often than traditional bike owners, so getting movement into your day becomes second nature.
Are electric bikes safe?
Yes, Ebikes are just as safe as standard bicycles, especially when basic bicycle riding etiquette is followed. In fact, with pedal assist removing the strain of hard pedaling, many Ebike riders feel safer on an Ebike than a regular bike, because keeping flow with other vehicles on the street is much easier. Crossing intersections does not require excessive energy.
Some analog bike riders fail to slow down or stop for obstacles and traffic, because they don't want to lose momentum and have to re-pedal up to speed. With an Ebike, slowing down for safety is no problem, because re-accelerating is effortless.
Every Ebike sold by EbikeCityZen also comes with UL safety listings for the battery and electronics. Some Ebike owners have tampered with the battery and wiring of their bikes, trying to make the bike go faster than designed, and some electrical fires were the result. You can rest assured that by properly maintaining your UL safety listed Ebike properly, those risks are extremely unlikely.
Read our blog about bicycle safety anxieties, and how EbikeCityZen helps you overcome them.
Can I ride an Ebike off-road?
Yes! EbikeCityZen has several Ebike models that are designed to help you enjoy nature trails and off-road adventures. As a certified Eunorau Ebike dealer, we have a selection of Fat-Tire and EMTB's. Some even offering extremely capable dual suspension systems, powerful mid-drive Bafang motors, and AWD versions!
Check out our collection of Ebikes designed specifically for your needs.
Do I have to pedal with an Ebike?
Only if you want to! Most of our quality Eunorau Ebikes are equipped with a thumb throttle or a twist throttle right on the handlebars. With the throttle, you can accelerate and maintain your desired speed without pedaling at all. However, most Ebike riders prefer to combine occasional throttle use with pedal assist to get the best of both worlds. Blip the throttle from a dead stop to get going, then let your feet easily keep up the pace. Or use the throttle to quickly pass a slow moving vehicle or get up a hill, then go back to pedal assist to save battery power.
How should I store my Ebike?
EbikeCityZen recommends to store your Ebike under cover or indoors wherever possible. Especially if you need to store your Ebike for extended periods, such as in the winter, we advise removing the battery and storing the battery in a climate controlled indoor setting. Do not allow the Ebike battery to freeze. Keep the battery at at about 80% charge when not riding your Ebike for more than a month, and if storing for several months, check and charge the battery if it drops below 40%.
Eunorau makes its quality Ebikes to be water resistant, so riding in the rain is not a problem. If the bike gets wet, simply towel it off after your ride. Don't expose the Ebike to constant wetness or allow it to be submerged in water deeper than the lowest point on the frame.
Should I get an Ebike with a Hub motor or mid-drive motor?
Both types have advantages and disadvantages. For most practical applications, a hub motor is perfectly suited to all but the most extreme riding conditions. Hub motor bikes are also less expensive and easier to repair, if a problem were to occur.
Mid-drive motor Ebikes are more expensive, and if you are going to ride on extremely hilly or rough terrain, the additional investment is worth it.
Common Misconception: “Ebikes are cheating”
Some in the traditional cycling community have called out Ebike riders as "cheating". In EbikeCityZen owner Joe Borrelli's experience, this has only happened a few times, and it was always told to me by someone wearing spandex shorts and a biking jersey riding on a $10k carbon fiber bike designed for the Tour d'France. They've got special shoes, aerodynamic helmets, and a full kit of expensive hardware. Road biking for fitness and sport is a great hobby, and very physically challenging. But it's not for everyone.
That's the magic of Ebikes - they make cycling accessible and expand the cycling community to be more inclusive to a huge range of folks. You don't need any special gear, no need to wear specialized outfits or shoes that clamp onto the pedals. You can just be a regular person.
Older folks who want to ride in their golden years, folks with less than ideal fitness, commuters wearing office attire, parents taking kids to school, people riding to run local errands, or a couple just out for a leisurely ride on a scenic path on the way to the ice cream shop. These are the kind of folks (and many more) who can ride an Ebike with ease.
All these regular folks getting outdoors, trading some of their car trips for bike rides, enjoying their community, and getting some light exercise along the way. That's the thing about Ebikes - you don't need to be a hard core "cyclist" to enjoy riding an Ebike. In EbikeCityZen's estimation, that's not cheating - That's winning!

What are the top Ebike brands?
When shopping for an electric bicycle, having an Ebike Expert who's a certified Ebike retailer for a quality brand is key. There's over 200 brands of Ebikes on websites that sell everything from A to Z - but who's standing behind those low priced Ebikes? There's a few "elite" brand names on the market with Ebikes that can easily top $3-4k when you add the options and accessories. EbikeCityZen is right in the middle. We sell quality Ebikes at a fair price. We specialize in a curated collection of quality Ebikes in the mid-price range.
You want an actual person to stand behind your investment - one who will be there to support you throughout your entire Ebike ownership experience. EbikeCityZen is proud to be Chicago's certified Eunorau dealer - Eunorau has been building quality Ebikes since 2009 and, they are sold through a dealer network here in North America, in Europe and in Australia. When do people realize they need an eBike?
How do I know when it’s time to buy an eBike instead of relying on my car or CTA?
If you’ve ever waited too long for a delayed CTA train, circled for 20 minutes looking for street parking, or paid $15 just to park blocks from a destination—you’re not alone. That’s exactly when most of our Chicago customers realize it's time. EbikeCityZen’s local riders tell us that models like the Eunorau Meta let them skip the stress and roll straight to their destination, no sweat, no parking drama.
What made your customers switch from public transportation to eBikes?
For many, it’s the unreliability of the CTA combined with rising fares and long walks between stations and home. Our customers use eBikes like the Specter ST to reclaim their commute—cutting travel times in half and enjoying every mile of protected bike lanes and Greenways. With pedal assist, you breeze past traffic and never worry about catching a train again.
What problems does an Ebike from EbikeCityZen help solve?
What problems do EbikeCityZen customers solve by switching to an electric bike?
Our eBikes solve common Chicago headaches: long commutes, expensive car ownership, and the daily CTA grind. The Meta is perfect for zipping through neighborhoods, and the G30 cargo bike makes grocery hauls and daycare drop-offs a breeze. Best of all, you show up sweat-free—no need to change clothes at work or pack a second outfit.
Can an eBike from EbikeCityZen replace my car for daily errands and work commutes?
Absolutely. Many of our customers have reduced or completely replaced their car use. The Eunorau G30 can carry your groceries, gear, or even a child on the rear seat—no more idling in traffic on Clark or trying to parallel park in Logan Square. It’s the car replacement you didn’t know you needed.
Is riding an eBike actually faster than driving or public transit in Chicago?
Yes—and we’ll prove it with a free at-home test ride. Riders in Edgewater, Lincoln Square, and Uptown regularly tell us that our bikes cut their commute time by 25–50%. With the Meta’s Class 2 assist up to 20 mph and throttle for stop-and-go traffic, you’ll outpace rush hour without breaking a sweat.
What alternatives do customers consider before buying an EbikeCityZen eBike?
What are the alternatives to buying an electric bike, and why do customers choose EbikeCityZen instead?
Our riders often consider the CTA, driving, or a regular bike before choosing one of our eBikes. But none of those options combine the speed, comfort, cargo capacity, and local support that EbikeCityZen provides. You won’t find the Eunorau Meta or G30 at big-box stores—and we personally help you test the right fit at your home before you decide.
Should I convert my regular bike to an eBike instead of buying a new one?
We hear this a lot—and while DIY kits seem cheaper, they often lead to headaches. With EbikeCityZen, you get factory-built, UL-certified bikes that are designed from the ground up for safety, comfort, and torque. We service what we sell, and your local bike shop may not touch a DIY kit. Our bikes come with support, accessories, and Chicago-savvy advice.
Why do customers pick EbikeCityZen over buying a scooter or moped?
Scooters and mopeds require registration, insurance, and can’t carry a kid or bags of groceries. Our ebikes like the G30 handle urban loads with ease, and no license is needed. Plus, our customers love getting a little exercise when they want—and using throttle power when they don’t.
What hesitations do customers have before buying an eBike—and how does EbikeCityZen help?
Is buying an Ebike really worth the cost? What if I don’t use it enough?
That’s why we offer free, no-pressure at-home test rides throughout Chicago. Most people who try an eBike end up riding more than they ever imagined. With models like the Meta and the Flash, commuting becomes something you actually look forward to. Our customers frequently tell us the bikes pay for themselves in gas, parking, and rideshare savings within months.
Are ebikes safe to ride in Chicago traffic?
Very much so. Our mid-range models have hydraulic disc brakes, built-in lights, and upright posture for full visibility. Riders feel more confident matching car speeds and navigating traffic safely. We also provide local route guidance so you can take the safest, most comfortable bike-friendly streets.
I’ve heard about battery fires—are your ebikes safe to charge at home?
100%. Every bike we sell uses UL-certified battery systems from reputable manufacturers. We don’t carry cheap knockoffs or grey-market imports. Safety is core to our business—our test ride bikes even include charger instructions and fire-safe storage tips for peace of mind.
What about bike theft in Chicago—isn’t that a big risk?
It’s a valid concern, and we help you plan for it. Every EbikeCityZen customer gets lock recommendations, advice on safe parking, and info on removable battery models. Many of our riders also store their bikes indoors or use accessories like GPS trackers. The Meta and G30 are designed for daily use and smart storage.
Can I ride your ebikes in the winter or through Chicago weather?
Yes! With some simple gear (bar mitts, lights, and fenders), most of our bikes perform year-round. The Specter ST is a full-suspension fat tire model that’s perfect for slushy winter rides, and we’ll help you set it up for seasonal success.
I’m older / out of shape / new to biking—is an Ebike still right for me?
100% yes. Our customers include seniors, busy parents, and first-time riders. The step-through Meta makes it easy to get on and off, and pedal assist means you can ride as much—or as little—as you want. Ebikes are for every body, and that’s exactly who we build this business for.
